I'm still excited to see what other stuff they do with the concept and the universe in the future. And many of its improvements have made (and are making) their way back to the first game, which is nice. ![]() Okay, not a tragedy, it's actually still a pretty good game. It's also made bad by the fact that they reversed their decision from above, adding a vehicle to allow them to increase the available land area, but that just made everything feel slow and empty.Ī tragedy of technical constraints and trying to find ways around them. The on-land stuff was basically just an experiment to see if they could apply the same basic exposure mechanics from the underwater gameplay to make that part of the game more compelling, and I think it almost worked, but it's just super difficult to make an icy hellscape at all interesting. The Sea Truck doesn't compare to the freedom that a mobile submarine home offered to the player.įrom what I remember, the Cyclops got cut specifically because the map was too small for it, and the map was smaller so that they could reduce the top speed of all the vehicles, and the top speed was reduced because they couldn't get the game to load in assets fast enough to avoid pop-in and a bunch of glitches associated with it. You never get that "I want to go home" vibe when diving in BZ, getting to the final biome of the game involves a random short dive in a couple spots of the map.Īlso the loss of the Cyclops in BZ cannot be overstated. BZ kind of loses that by condensing the map size, you really don't even need the Sea Truck most of the time. Going from Safe Shallows to Lost River feels like a one-way journey. Part of Subnautica's charm was it's large map size and depth, it made traversal such a central mechanic and so important to progression. The more limited world scope of BZ was pretty disappointing. ![]() The following story that unfolds + the characters are interesting enough to keep you going as well, despite it being a longer game for a 1st playthrough. Being stranded on an alien planet trying to pull off an impossible escape was a compelling hook. Story/atmosphere of Subnautica was just better. BZ doubles down on it and I don't think it paid off. Subnautica got away with land sections because they were very few and make for great changes of pace from normal gameplay. /r/GamePhysics - Clips of game physics shining and glitchingĭesign based on /r/FlatBlue created by /u/creeschīZ's land sections suck./r/gaming4gamers - middle ground between purely-for-fun and more serious subreddits./r/GamingLeaksAndRumours - Leaks and Rumors.Posting unmarked spoilers will result in removal and warning, and posting spoilers with malicious intent will result in a ban.
